Oxford take the top spot in Manchester

On Wednesday 8th May, the 11th Steve Moore Memorial Poster event was held at the Care Technology Facility in Manchester. A whole host of insightful posters were demonstrated on the day, but there could only be one winner! Graham Morrissey, Branch Treasurer of the IAT North West Branch, explains the day below…

The competition

As we have done for the past two years, we opened the event to everyone in the UK and had a great response with 18 submitting abstracts which resulted in 16 posters being displayed on the day. All posters related to the 3R’s, covering several different species ranging from the most commonly used species of mice and fish through to birds & marmosets. First prize was an all-expenses paid trip to AALAS later this year in Denver, second prize was a £100 gift voucher and third prize was a £50 gift voucher.

A buffet lunch was provided on arrival and attendees were encouraged to take their food through to the seminar room where our sponsors were situated and the posters displayed.  Interaction with our sponsors was encouragingly high as was the interest in the posters. We had four judges for the day who were faced with the unenviable tasks of trying to pick a winner. All four scrutinised the posters on their own and met an hour later to discuss their choices and finalise their decision.

The results

1st prize: “MR and CT compatible electrical heating system for mouse imaging”- Sheena Wallington & Veerle Kersemans, Oxford University

2

2nd prize: “Development of an orthoptic murine model for bladder cancer”- Richard Walshaw & Jo Roberts, University of Manchester

3

3rd prize: “Ultrasonic vocalisation as a measure of positive welfare in rats”- Timothy Jones, DSTL

Following the announcement of the winners, we sat down to listen to two completely contrasting seminars. Dr Sinead Savage gave an enlightening talk on nanomaterials and how they are used to try and help with Parkinson’s disease. Then, Dr Stewart Owen gave us an insight into what it is like to run a trout farm and the issues involved.

Congratulations and a special thanks to all of the poster presenters and to the winners, the judges on the day (Elaine Kirkum, Caroline Chadwick, Stewart Owen and Paul Finnemore), our two presenters and all our sponsors:  Avidity Science, LBS, MMM Group, Surrey Diagnostics, Vet-Tech, ips, Datesand, SDS, Impex, The Learning Curve, Aston Pharma, NKP, Isotec, Tecniplast and all attendees for their interaction and enthusiasm.
