The Last Conference… (of 2019)

The 26th-28th November marked the final trade exhibition of the year for Datesand with the Annual LASA winter conference in Birmingham. Nicky, Ryan, Nilgun and Jonathon all spent time at the stand that once again offered a fantastic display and insight into what Datesand has to offer.

Though a quieter than usual conference with the impending AST conference in March ahead of us, there was still plenty to see and do and there was a great atmosphere from day one. We were happy to welcome some new faces and get to know a host of new people within the industry, but as ever it was great to see old friends!

As usual, there was a fantastic gala dinner hosted for all attendees. This was yet another great opportunity to socialise with friends, colleagues and competitors alike with drinks, food and dancing all round.

It was fantastic to end the year on such a high. We’ve had the absolute pleasure of attending so many amazing events this year with so much more to come in 2020! Nicky even managed to squeeze in one more just a week before LASA over in Arnhem, Netherlands.

Biotechnische Dagen saw around 40 traders this year, including one of our distributors, Bio-Services, who Nicky had gone to support. As well as having two days of workshops, posters and papers on offer, Nicky was also given the chance to hold four mini-presentations about the Janet Wood Innovation Award.

Hard Work Pays Off

Datesand are absolutely delighted to announce that we have been nominated for two awards at the 2019 Insider International Trade Awards.

The nominations include ‘International Company of the Year’ and ‘Excellence & Innovation in International Trade’.

company-of-the-year innovation

These awards are set up to celebrate import, export and international business across the North West region. They are in association with the Department for International Trade and sponsored by the Business Insider Magazine Group.

It is with thanks to the whole Datesand team, customers, distributors and all those who have entered the Janet Wood Innovation Award so far that we have had this great opportunity.

With hard work, determination and fantastic support we are proud to exhibit our growing success and share our story with the people that have helped us get to where we are today.

Sharing Our Love For Caring

At Datesand, our values are based around ‘caring for those who care for others’ and so the Janet Wood Innovation Award was set up to really exaggerate this within the industry.‍

What you do, as researchers, technicians, welfare officers and so much more, makes a difference every day. Putting animal welfare as a priority and going that extra mile on a regular basis to ensure that a great level of care goes in everything you do should be and feel very rewarding.

The Janet Wood Innovation Award helps people like you get the recognition you deserve and receive physical rewards for taking what you do and turning it into a creative experience.

It is absolutely fair to say that you, more than anybody else, know exactly the kind of products and innovations the industry needs on this ever-developing journey of improved animal welfare. By setting up this competition, we’re opening our ears and listening to your ideas to collectively bring potentially industry-changing products onto the market.

As animal welfare is at the forefront of this, we ensure that the 3Rs (Reduction, Refinement & Replacement) must be considered and explained in any new products for it to begin to be considered viable.

Should you design a winning product, you will have the opportunity to visit any Life Sciences conference of your choice, anywhere in the world with all expenses covered. On top of that, you will receive £4,000/$5,000 towards publication in an open access scientific journal.

You will also be very much involved in the whole process of creating, selling and marketing the product. It is our pleasure to promote you and the hard work you have put into the process. As your product, we will make sure that you are happy with the final designs.

A Flying Visit

In November, Datesand were treated to a visit from Pete Willan.

Pete has been working alongside Datesand for many years after bringing us some fantastic product ideas.

In 2001, Datesand started selling the NestPak, designed by Pete himself, which continues to be a favourite product still today as it conveniently offers bedding, nesting and environmental enrichment all in one package!

Most recently, Pete designed the C-Saw and submitted this into the 2019 Janet Wood Innovation Award… Not much has changed in almost 20 years!!

After careful judging and public voting, this brand-new product ended up as the runner-up of our previous competition and industry professionals all round are loving this new, versatile piece of enrichment.

This was a great opportunity for the team to talk with Pete about his design and also for Pete to get a first-hand look at the process Datesand had taken from his initial design to market-ready production.

You can request a FREE sample of the C-Saw over on our website now!

North East Festivities

This year, the IAT North East Branch held their annual Christmas party at SnoZone in Castleford on the 15th November.  It’s never too early to get into the Christmas spirit! There was a fun filled hour of “Wacky Races” sledging followed by food and a catch up with friends and colleagues.

Sledging, racing, getting snow covered and watching co-workers fall over repeatedly – what more could you ask for? The event was great fun and well attended, around 35 attendees from various establishments from the North East area. After drying off everyone headed over to Frankie and Benny’s for some very much needed dinner. The food had been kindly sponsored by Agenda, Allentown, Aston Pharma, Datesand, Envigo, Scanbur and Tecniplast.

What a fantastic way to close the year! It was definitely one of the best events yet, with more like it to come in 2020. Anybody who would like to get involved and attend events are more than welcome at the NE branch with a great bunch of people already there to welcome you in. The North East Branch would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
